Food For Now

About

Hello. Thanks for coming to have a look.

These are humble beginnings. I would ultimately like to try and bring together all the information on seasonality in food, where it’s coming from and what the trends are over the weeks, months are years into one place. But there’s a long way to go yet.

I’m starting with my simple/simplistic distillation of all the intricate, interwoven changes that we see in vegetables & fruit. Through my job in a London restaurant, I’m lucky enough to have access to people with an immense knowledge on the subject. I hope that as time goes on, I can bring across their and my enthusiasm for the subject.

Of course, there’s a lot more to seasonality than mere fruit & veg. They seem like a good starting point though, as more than anything they are subject to the vagaries of our climate and seasons.

It’s worth just reminding ourselves why seasonality is important. It comes down to three things: food in season tastes better; it contains many times more nutrients and vitamins than its poorer ‘forced’ cousin; and it normally comes from closer to home.

On the last point, food miles are super-important and I spend a lot of my working day figuring out how to reduce them. But oranges don’t grow in England naturally… There is no shame in buying a Mediterranean orange in summer, or an Indian Alphonso mango in spring. That’s where they come from, and where they grow best. They will come by boat/lorry, not air, and will taste fantastic. Let’s not self-flagellate too much, and indulge in the benefits of this global economy of ours.

Do let me know what you think.

James
